Recent Activities

First Activity
Preparation for and participation in the Core Virtual Interest Group Week

The call for proposals was sent out on multiple listservs in January 2022 to solicit proposals for presentations on topics related to the role of professional librarians in technical services. Three proposals were selected to be presented during IG virtual week. The program took place on March 9, 2022. The meeting had 469 registrations for the virtual event, 251 of whom attended live.

The presentation materials and recordings of three IG Virtual week presentations were posted on the ALA Connect Group space. The topics covered by the presentations were:
– Want to be a Cataloging Manager?

Sofia Slutskaya and Marina Morgan submitted a report about the IG’s program which will be published in the Technical Services Quarterly journal.

Third Activity
Preparation for the face-to-face program during ALA Annual Conference in June 2022

The program will take place on June 26, 2022. The purpose of the program is to facilitate a discussion about the role of professional librarians in technical services to increase membership engagement and help with planning future IG professional development events. The call for discussion facilitators was distributed in May 2022. The program will include four separate discussions facilitated by the group members. The larger group will reconvene at the end to hear discussion reports and discuss IG plans for the following year.

What will your group be working on for the next 6 months?
The IG will continue to work on future ALA programs, and focus on the transition of leadership to the new co-chairs. The call for co-vice chairs was sent out in May. IG documents are organized in IG Google Drive to support a smooth transition of leadership.

Additional comments or concerns:
This group has co-chairs. The other chair is Amy Fry – amyfry@illinois.edu
I think it would be more logical if this report was due after ALA to include the group’s ALA Annual program.
It would also be helpful if vice-chair/vice-chairs were added to the Core Chairs ALA Connect. It will prepare them better for their role as chair and will help with transition.
