Fifth Activity
The Co-Chairs and Co Vice-Chairs met virtually and communicated via emails to prepare the program for the Interest Group’s meeting at ALA Annual. The meeting will take place on June 25, 2023 with the purpose of facilitating a discussion about the role of professional librarians in technical services to increase membership engagement and help with planning future IG professional development events.
The chairs and vice-chairs sent out calls for proposals to multiple listserv to solicit topics of discussions during the meeting. The roundtable moderators will be discussing the multi-faceted roles that professional academic librarians play in technical services. Attendees will choose which topic of discussion is of interest and will share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas.
Meets Core’s strategic goals for Career Building and Recognition, Membership and Value to Members

What will your group be working on for the next 6 months?
After ALA Annual, the incoming Co-Chairs Alaine Mundt and Greg Ferguson will take over the responsibilities of the Interest Group.

Is there anything Core could have provided during this time that would have helped your group with its work?
The current Co-Chairs, Marina Morgan and Amy Fry were added very late (March 7, 2023) to the "Core Interest Group Chairs" community. Because of that, we missed important communications from Core, one of which was the Feb 1, 2023 deadline to pick a time slot for our IG discussion/meeting at ALA Annual. However, Jenny Levine and Thomas Ferren helped us and we were able to secure a meeting slot at ALA Annual.

Please provide suggestions for future education topics, initiatives, publications, resources, or other activities that could be developed based on your group’s work.
My suggestion is to change the submission date of this report after the annual conference.

Our IG met at ALA on June 26, 2022, and focused on the discussion about the role of professional librarians in technical services. The program included four separate discussions facilitated by the group members. The meeting consisted of four round tables where discussion facilitators led the conversation and encouraged participants to share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Representatives from the larger groups provided short reports on the topics covered in their discussion groups, which included “Exploring Normalcy in Technical Services,” “Telling the Technical Services Story,” “Technical Services Retreat: Professional Development, Wellness, and Team Building for Technical Services,” and “Technical Services Advocacy Outside of Tech Services.”

Third Activity
After ALA, the IG reconvened virtually to discuss the outcomes of the IG meeting. The group decided to write another article based on the IG's meeting at ALA. This time, the IG Chair Sofia Slutskaya, Vice Co-Chair Marina Morgan, and Vice Co-Chair Amy Fry decided to include as authors the lead discussion facilitators Jennifer M. Eustis, Jessie Copeland, and Cara Calabrese. The article titled "Report of the Core Role of the Professional Librarian in Technical Services Interest Group, American Library Association Annual Conference, June 2022" was published by Taylor & Francis in the Technical Services Quarterly journal on December 15, 2022.
Meets Core’s strategic goals for Membership and Value to Members

Fourth Activity
Co-Chairs Marina Morgan and Amy Fry met virtually with Vice Co-Chairs Greg Ferguson and Alayne Mundt to prepare for IG's participation in the 2023 Core Virtual Interest Group Week. We prepared a call for proposals, which will be sent out in December. What will your group be working on for the next 6 months?
Our IG will assess and evaluate the proposals for the 2023 Core Virtual Interest Group Week. We look forward to providing an engaging session with 2-3 short presentations (20 minutes max. each) offered in tight succession followed by a brief Q&A session.

After the Core Virtual Interest Group Week, we will work on our IG's meeting at ALA.

The larger group will reconvene at the end to hear discussion reports and discuss IG plans for the following year.
Meets Core’s strategic goals for Continuing Education, Membership and Engagement

What will your group be working on for the next 6 months?
The IG will continue to work on future ALA programs, and focus on the transition of leadership to the new co-chairs. The call for co-vice chairs was sent out in May. IG documents are organized in IG Google Drive to support a smooth transition of leadership.

Additional comments or concerns:
This group has co-chairs. The other chair is Amy Fry – amyfry@illinois.edu
I think it would be more logical if this report was due after ALA to include the group’s ALA Annual program.
It would also be helpful if vice-chair/vice-chairs were added to the Core Chairs ALA Connect. It will prepare them better for their role as chair and will help with transition.
