First Activity

Committee decided to review Metadata Schema Assessment Framework each cycle (2 years) with first public review circulating in 2026. Group will review internally for changes or modifications needed. Internal review started April 2026.

Libguide access was granted after March 2026; group will continue work on updated and consolidating resources to complete the public facing product.

  • NISO rep reappointed through Leadership Team; will begin term July 2026. Recommendations will resume at that time
  • Discussions related to how the Schema Assessment Framework could be used pedagogically continued in the committee and generation of case studies to improve usability

  • Access to the LibGuide granted to all members; work on aggregation of standards can continue
  • Review schedule of the Schema Assessment Framework now in place with first phase, internal review, beginning Spring 2026

Current discussions are related to making the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework more accessible and approachable for metadata specialists by including case studies and use cases for its application.

Once complete, the Libguide will offer an unpaywalled aggregate of standards related resources which will help to make education and shared understanding more accessible.

First Activity

1. Assessed the current content and format of the ALCTS Standards LibGuide.  Made decisions to help reduce maintenance by leveraging assets and set expectations related to the content of the guide. Planned for the update process once committee members gain access to the guide.

2. Plan to reach out to the community to solicit feedback and use cases for the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework.  Decision to have use cases either be in a separate repository or amended to the Framework.

Recommendations for NISO practices

ALA Core’s NISO membership was renewed and MSC expects we will have a new representative to NISO in Spring 2026. 

Education on developing and revised standards, best practices or guidelines, and their application

Once updated, the LibGuide will be a valuable resource for information on current and past standards.

Communication with organizations that create and maintain relevant standards, practices or guidelines

The Committee will reach out to other CORE groups as work on the LibGuide is finalized in order to capture their feedback and ensure the content is aligned with standards in their areas of expertise.

The Committee plans to complete major revisions on the LibGuide before the next reporting period.

The Committee continues to review and solicit feedback on the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework and will circulate targeted feedback questionnaires before the next reporting period.

Fifth Activity
How did your work contribute to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, or belonging within Core or the library profession? What areas of improvement do you see for your committee or Core in these areas?

Once the LibGuide is complete, it will serve as a valuable, open access tool to find relevant standards across the profession. This work will also serve as a platform to aggregate alternative controlled vocabularies, helping to make them more visible to catalogers and metadata professionals.

First Activity

Accomplishments/Work done:

  1. Organized a Core presentation on the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework published by the Committee in the ALA Institutional Repository. Presenters included both current and past members of the Committee.  The presentation was held on March 31st, 2025. It had been publicized in various listservs and was well attended with 167 attendees of the 340 registrants. The recording and slides were made available to the wider membership following the presentation.
  2. Worked on updating the ALCTS Standards LibGuide.  The draft of two sections of the updated ALA Core Standards LibGuide (Cataloging and Metadata Management & Continuing Resources) are close to being completed.
  3. The Committee has an incoming Chair and Vice-Chair in place.

Recommendations for NISO practices

ALA Core’s NISO membership had lapsed; the Committee, therefore, did not have a NISO representative for the 2024-2025 cycle. The membership has been renewed, and a NISO liaison will be assigned, resuming this work in the Fall.

Education on developing and revised standards, best practices or guidelines, and their application

Organized a free presentation for the Core membership on evaluating metadata schema for collections.

Communication with organizations that create and maintain relevant standards, practices or guidelines

Working on updating a metadata standards LibGuide. Will be reaching out to stakeholder groups for feedback on draft revisions in the future.

The Committee over the next year plans to continue the work of revising and updating the LibGuide including reaching out for feedback to various stakeholder groups.

The Committee will review feedback on the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework and develop a rolling timeline for review, response, and implementation as necessary.

In revising the ALCTS Standards LibGuide, we will focus on vocabularies and standards that are inclusive and can help with the discovery of materials and resources related to underrepresented groups and subjects.

First Activity

Accomplishments/Work done:

  1. Published Metadata Schema Assessment Framework (document completed over past several years) to the ALA Institutional Repository (ALAIR). Added metadata (Description and Keywords) to the ALAIR page describing the Framework. See: https://hdl.handle.net/11213/22781
  2. Working on a Core webinar to present the Framework to a wider audience. Two current Committee members and two past Committee members heavily involved in developing the Framework will present the webinar. Working with Core staff on the dates–most likely the webinar will be held towards the end of March.
  3. Working on updating and revising the ALCTS Standards LibGuide (https://hdl.handle.net/11213/22781). Currently the Committee is working on reviewing the content of the Guide to see what needs updating.

    • ALA at the moment has dropped its NISO membership. The Committee therefore currently does not have a NISO representative.
  • Education on developing and revised standards, best practices or guidelines, and their application
    • The Committee published the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework open access on ALAIR. It’s working on a webinar to educate and inform the membership about the Framework. It is also working on updating the ALCTS Standards LibGuide.
  • Communication with organizations that create and maintain relevant standards, practices or guidelines
    • As part of the work on revising and updating the ALCTS Standards LibGuide, the Committee will identify and reach out to other stakeholder Core groups that it can work with for updating/reviewing the content of the LibGuide.

Metadata Standards Committee – December 2022 Report

Recent Activities

First Activity
Since receiving the public feedback from the initial draft of the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework, we have met monthly to review and discuss the suggested changes. We were fortunate to have significant engagement during the feedback period and have been carefully reviewing suggested changes and edits, some of which have required major edits to the original draft.

What will your group be working on for the next 6 months?
We will continue to evaluate comments and suggestions from the public review of the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework and make edits in anticipation of releasing the updated version of the Framework as well as discussing plans for future maintenance and updates.

Please provide suggestions for future education topics, initiatives, publications, resources, or other activities that could be developed based on your group’s work.
Once the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework has been completed, we would be interested in proposing an education session and/or publication introducing and explaining the Framework.

Metadata Standards Committee – May 2022 Report

Recent Activities

First Activity
Continuing work on a multi-year project. The Metadata Standards Committee have been working on a Metadata Standard Assessment Framework that would help information professionals evaluate metadata schemas to determine best fit for repositories, projects, or institutional needs. The committee has completed a draft and intends to release it for public comment around June 1st.

Second Activity
Extended invitation to the NISO liaison to participate in MSC committee meetings and added a permanent agenda item for NISO related metadata updates.

The next 6 month, the committee will be gathering community feedback on the Metadata Standard Assessment Framework and incorporate the input in a revision to the draft.
